Waiting lists are not always "first come, first served"
When your GP sends a referral, the consultant first decides whether the referral contains enough information and whether your condition requires routine, urgent or very urgent assessment. Patients with potentially serious conditions may be offered appointments ahead of people who have been waiting much longer.
This means that two patients referred on the same day may receive appointments at completely different times. The difference is usually based on clinical need rather than the date the referral was received.
If your symptoms change while you are waiting, it is important to contact your GP. Your doctor may decide that an updated referral or additional clinical information should be sent to the hospital.
