ENT Waiting Lists in Ireland: How Long Are Patients Waiting?
Thousands of adults and children in Ireland are waiting for an ear, nose and throat consultation or treatment. For some patients, the wait is measured not in weeks or months, but in years. Here is what the latest 2026 figures show and what options may be available if you do not want to continue waiting.
What do the latest ENT waiting-list figures show?
Recent figures from Cork provide a clear example of the pressure facing public ENT services in Ireland.

Why are ENT waiting lists so important?
ENT, also known as otolaryngology, covers conditions affecting the ears, nose, sinuses, throat, tonsils, voice, hearing and related areas of the head and neck.
Although many ENT conditions are not immediately life-threatening, they can have a significant effect on sleep, hearing, breathing, communication, school, work and everyday life.
Patients may be waiting for help with:
- recurrent tonsillitis or enlarged tonsils
- blocked nasal breathing or a deviated septum
- chronic sinusitis and recurring sinus infections
- hearing loss, ear infections or persistent ear problems
- grommet insertion for children
- nasal polyps
- snoring or sleep-related breathing problems
- adenoid problems
- tinnitus, dizziness or balance-related symptoms
Long waiting times may mean that symptoms continue for months or years before a patient is assessed by an ENT specialist. The waiting time can also become longer if a consultation is followed by separate waiting lists for tests or surgery.
ENT outpatient care is not the same as ENT surgery
An outpatient waiting list usually relates to the first specialist consultation. During that appointment, the ENT consultant may examine the patient, review previous medical records and recommend further tests or treatment.
If surgery is then recommended, the patient may be placed on a separate day-case or inpatient waiting list. This means that getting the first appointment does not necessarily mean that the treatment itself will happen immediately.

You do not necessarily have to remain on a public waiting list without exploring other available options.
1. Check your current position and hospital
HSE waiting times vary between hospitals, regions, age groups and types of care. The waiting time for a first outpatient consultation may also be different from the waiting time for a day-case or inpatient procedure.
Patients can use the HSE waiting-list service to review estimated waiting times by hospital and specialty. You can also contact the hospital directly if you need confirmation that your referral has been received or want to ask whether an appointment date has been allocated.
2. Ask whether you may be offered treatment elsewhere
In some cases, the National Treatment Purchase Fund may offer eligible public patients an appointment or treatment in another public or private hospital.
However, an offer is not guaranteed, and patients may still experience significant delays before alternative care becomes available.
3. Arrange private ENT care
Some patients choose to arrange a private ENT consultation so that their condition can be assessed sooner. Following the consultation, the specialist can advise whether medication, further testing or surgery is required.

4. Check whether HSE reimbursement may apply
Under the EU Cross-Border Directive, eligible public patients living in Ireland may arrange planned healthcare in another EU country and apply to the HSE for reimbursement after the treatment.
Eligibility depends on factors including the referral, treatment type and whether the care would normally be available through the Irish public healthcare system.
Patients generally pay the clinic directly and then submit the required documents to the HSE. The reimbursement cannot normally exceed the amount that the HSE would pay for the same or equivalent treatment in Ireland.
